This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri thinks she is feeling better, well better than she sounds. Her ears are still plugged, but at least it is drowning out the sound of "Al's" constant banging with his nuts and bolts on his tray. :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is sick of being sick. Unfortunately, Sheri's patience with Bob and "Al" is dwindling the worse she feels. Doctor said it is viral infection so no antibiotics for this gal. He said it has been running 8-10 days, this is day 6, she better dig deep for a new level of patience and ... pray Bob and "Al" do not catch this thing.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Bob was feeling better yesterday, however Sheri was not. So in order to keep "them" engaged Sheri brought out one of the 36 piece Alzheimer puzzles again, knowing he can not complete them. Things were going fairly well, Bob finding a piece or two here and there. But then "Al" starting asking for an exacto knife to trim the pieces down and began roaming the house looking for one. She did not have the energy to distract him, so she compromised...  "Al" scotched tape the puzzle together.
Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri feels bad, but she has realized this week that pain makes her grouchy. She knows it is not Bob or "Al's" fault but "Al" wants to know the plan, and Sheri just wants the plan to be MAKE THE PAIN IN HER MOUTH STOP!
Care giving is hard enough when you feel fine, but when you feel bad... well quite frankly it sucks.
(I apologize for the s word, Bob would be appalled)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Caregivers have a hard time taking care of their own health needs, so Sheri has been trying to take better care of herself and let go of her worry and anxiety. However... her trip to the dentist set her back a bit. (in the anxiety department)
LOL :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Dear sweet Bob. Sheri took him with to the pharmacy to try to find something to help with the foot pain. "Al. was picking up random things like hair coloring,  vitamins, and toys asking "is this what you are looking for", Sheri was frustrated at first, but then it dawned on her, Bob knew something was wrong with Sheri, "Al" just could not understand what she needed. Actually when Sheri realized he was trying to help, her foot did not feel any better... but her heart sure did. :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

It was a long weekend with Bob and "Al" with Sheri not being able to get out and around because of her foot issues. Bob can not even dress himself much less pour his own coffee so Sheri spent way more time on her foot then she should have. But Sheri is going to try to find a positive here, at least both issues are in the same foot. :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is having foot issues. She thought it was just Plantar Fasciitis, which she has had before. But she wound up at Urgent Care Friday afternoon, with a swollen ankle. She apparently has gout in her ankle... as well as Plantar Fascittis. Another new challenge in taking care of Bob and "Al". "Al" wants to know the plan, Sheri wants the pain in her foot to go away. Ugh.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is still struggling with bronchitis. The good thing is though, at least when she complains Bob does not seem to mind, because "Al" does not remember her previous whining and complaining.
See you just gotta look for that silver lining. :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is still sick. Poor Bob wants to help. Sheri says "okay" trying to make him feel useful, "can you get me a glass of water the kitchen?" "Sure" Bob replies, with is thumb in his belt loop stretching out his back in his usual way, he starts his journey down the short hall. "Al" returns a few seconds later and says "sorry to bother you, but wheres the kitchen?"
(heavy sigh)
