This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Well Bob definitely has some kind of theme going on here. In yesterdays pocket haul we 33 sugar packets,15 straw stir sticks, five napkins and two paper place mats. She is just not sure where all the left over nuts and bolts from the weekend activities fits in with theme, Sheri is surprised the man could even walk with the weight of his pockets :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is never quite sure what "Al" might have tucked away inside of Bob's shirt at the end of the day. Clearly, as usual , he was holding choir close to his heart :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Well... it looks like "Al" may be finding his own things for Bob to fidget with. Sheri is just not sure  how long it will take before the "choir bus" company will notice the missing reflectors.  EEK :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri checked Bob's pockets as she was helping with his pajamas last night and was pleased not to see anymore pencils with big flowers in his pockets. (She returned the five from last week to the Adult Day Center. ) "Al" however was much more creative today, because while undressing Bob, under his shirt tucked inside is undies was low and behold ... another pencil with a big yellow fake rose which he nonchalantly pulled out and handed Sheri.
Well, Bob did use to call Sheri "His yellow rose of Texas" So she thinks she will keep this one. :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is not quite  sure how comfortable Bob could have been at "work" yesterday (code for Adult Day Center). "Al" brought home quite the haul in his pockets. Bob may need bigger pants  :)

5 pencils with flower tops and 2 bags of Cheezits

Living with Bob and "Al"

"Al" told Sheri he waited till no one was around to collect this last stack of napkins (used of course) from "work" (code for Adult Day Center) stashed deep in every pocket possible. Said he thought he had enough for a ten person meal.
(And then some:)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri need to make a note to herself, to check Bob's pockets before putting "Al's"jeans in the wash. Vanilla wafers and milk may be good for snack at "work" (code for Adult Day Center), but vanilla wafers and washing machine water just makes for well...mush. :(

Living with Bob and "Al"

Well, not only are the dynamic duo swiping cheeezits, but "Al" has somehow convinced Bob there is a high value to gently used paper napkins. So much so that Bob brings home pockets full daily and has found them important enough to write his initials on them. (just in case anyone else thought of swiping them)    :)

Living with Bob and "Al"

Dear sweet "Al". Sheri took Bob and "Al" to urgent care today directly after work because it seemed like his cough was getting worse and Sheri wanted them to check his lungs. While sitting on the bed, the doctor told Bob to take deep breathes in and out so she could listen to his lungs, and he did... but it turned out that the crackling noise she was hearing was from yet another bag of Cheezits under Bob's shirt. :)
Sheri thinks pat downs may be in order.

Living with Bob and "Al"

When Sheri picked Bob up from "work" (code for Adult Day Center) on Wednesday, she had to go straight to Target to pick up a few things. The weather has warmed up a tad bit but Bob is still cold so he still had his coat and gloves on. As they were leaving the store Bob stops right outside exit doors and starts unzipping his coat. Sheri can't imagine what he is doing. She says "What are you doing Bob?" He responds "Just a minute I remembered something." Then "Al" reaches not only under his coat but under his flannel shirt as well, and pulls out 2 six by six inch bags of Cheezit crackers. Now Sheri's heart is racing realizing they are still with in security camera shot and she is feeling slightly dizzy as she takes a quick survey around for security guards and cameras, she grabs the bags from Bob but then thinks it might look worse if she has them, so she shoves them back in his hands. (You would have to know me well to know the fear that set in, in my body.) Sheri leans in close to Bob and in a quiet hushed voice says " Bob, Where did you get these?" "Al" replies in a proud voice " they gave them out and work today and nobody ate these so I took them for you." Sheri took a deep breath and hustled them out to the car.
With a heavy sigh... of relief :)
