Dear friends, this life we have on this earth is so very short, and our Alzheimer burdens are many and very heavy. Sheri wants to tell you though, if you wake up and hear the birds singing, God has blessed you greatly...cast your cares upon Him.
1Peter 5:7
Cast all your cares upon Him, for he cares for you.
This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"
Sheri has realized she has only touched the surface of what she is feeling. Sheri has said before that she and Bob's marriage was shaky at best before she knew about "Al", which is why redefining roles and relationships is so hard now. There are so many unresolved issues that she will never get resolved, and now when she sees him in the long term care facility, and she not doing the day to day cares, she goes blind to the disease for a quick moment and just wants a quick moment of Bob... for some answers. Although the reasonable part of Sheri's brain knows that "Al" is the answer, all these dark and winding roads in her mind lead only to a dead end street.

Living with Bob and "Al"
Sheri tries hard to give others a glimpse of why Alzheimer's is so much more than memory loss. The things she can't show, are things like trying to explain that the music making from yesterdays video, happens all day long, and if it is not with his nuts and bolts it is with anything in his hands. Of course she is grateful Bob still has enough coordination to do that, she has had to be a bit creative herself and has found that her headphones and some hymns playing through her phone help drown out the constant banging of "Al"s music. :)
Simple pleasures.

Living with Bob and "Al"
Bob the handyman and "Al" the fashionista that he is, worked together to come up with a handy fashionable place to carry Bob's cane... pants have multiple uses, when you need to wave down the "choir bus" driver :)
