This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri can not keep him safe, Sheri can not keep him safe, Sheri can not keep him safe, Sheri can not keep him safe, Sheri can not keep him safe, Sheri can not keep him safe.......

  1. Change is scary. And I have a suggestion to change your mantra, if I may. "In his new home he'll be safe." Because the one you're using somehow suggests you didn't do enough. And we all know you did... you did everything you could and this is the right move.

Virtual hugs to you. Enormous strength to you in figuring out the "plan" from here on.

  3. Sheri, you are essential because you are the 'expert' when it comes to caring for Bob and Al. You, alongside the professional caregivers, will still continue to look after physical and emotional health. In your role as the 'expert' you will need to inform, advise, recommend, help make decisions, and encourage the best quality of care for their new resident. Sometimes leaders/experts benefit from being able to share and delegate.
Exodus 18:17-23 New International Version (NIV)
17 Moses father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. 21 But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”

  4. You are keeping Bob safe. You asked for God's help and it's on the way. My prayers are with you.

You are right. You, alone could not do it. But you made the decision that will make him the safest that he can be 24/7. With you always in my mind, Bob will always be that tall, 18 year old tuba player.
