This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

In Sheri's endless pursuit of something to keep Bob and "Al" engaged, Sheri thought back to Bob's work life and adding up things on an adding machine was a daily event. Sheri gave him a stack of old checks and asked him to punch the numbers into a big ten key type adding machine, it was really just for something different to do. Bob was very eager to get started. The first check Bob tries, "Al" turns to Sheri and says " well, this first number is 36 but what does this 46 number over a line and 100 mean?" The questioning continued for each check he picked up. Sheri really had no idea that Bob's cognitive impairment had reached that level. But on the bright side at least he could still read the numbers. What an incredibly strange disease.

  1. My mom was an English teacher for 30 years and the last 3 years could not tell you what a noun was. That's when I wept. You are right....what a strange disease.

    1. It is so sad isn't it. Who they were just does not exsist anymore.

  2. Sheri,
You, "Al" and Bob bring me much joy everyday when I check in on your blog. Thank you for your honesty, sense of humor and letting us get a glimpse of what it looks like in someone else's home who is struggling to find peace with "Al" and maintain some sense of normality.
God's grace is sufficient and may He abound you with it and a confidence that it is Him you are loving daily too as you love Bob.
