This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

About 2 months ago, Sheri was told by one of Bob's doctors that they needed to lower the dose of his antidepressant. It had to do with some new health guidelines for someone his age. Sheri is concerned because his mood is starting to reflect the change. Sometimes Sheri is confused by guidelines designed for the general public. In Sheri's opinion keeping Bob and "Al" as happy and comfortable as possible is her only goal. People forget Alzheimer's is a terminal illness, it is not going to get better, so why not make it as easy as possible.
Sheri hates this disease.

  1. I think you are thinking correctly about keeping the patient as comfortable as possible. The physician may not be thinking about the patient, but about some regulatory group who reviews the prescriptions he writes and and then writes him up if he doesn't adhere to the guidelines. You are best suited for making a decision about what is best in a case like this - after all, you are an observer and interested party held captive through love by this dreadful disease.

  2. I'd call the doctor and tell him the new dosage isn't working out for your husband. I would think 2 months was a fair enough trial. Praying for a speedy resolution for you and your husband.

  3. I agree - go back to the old dosage. Guidelines are just guidelines and you have to do what works best for you guys. Good luck!!
