This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Bob was standing in the kitchen with his thumb in his belt loop, stretching out his back in his usual way. With a slight smirk on his face "Al" told Sheri that the choir at "work" (code for Adult Day Center) was getting so good, that pretty soon his "boss" better start making people try out, because not just anyone is good enough."  :)

  1. I love the way you describe these conversations. I think it's kind of sweet that he doesn't question why there is a choir (with try outs) at "work." :)

I see my Mom smirk sometimes too, like there's an inside joke I'm not quite getting. Respecting her sense of self and independence (even if I'm just pretending) is one of the hardest parts of Alzheimers. It feels like lying, but also the kindest thing to do.

  2. Emily, it is funny that he never puts two and two together. But I guess it is a blessing in disguise :) I don't like to think of it as lying either :(
