This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and Al
Sheri took Bob on their almost regular outing to the mall yesterday. Bob needed to use the restroom so Sheri decided she really needed to know just where he was at with the following directions skill, so she asked him to try to find it on his own. She reminded him the signs are usually up high. They were standing about 20 yards from the big sign in in sky, that said restrooms with an arrow. One of the things she learned from this experiment was that Bob and "Al" take everything very literally. Bob looked up and found the sign, taking longer than the average person (no surprise there) but when he followed the sign he expected the bathroom to be right where the sign was. This was of course the first directional sign at the outer edge of the food court area. "Al" was confused as he stood under the sign, that the restroom was not there he tried a side door to one of the stores that was locked so Sheri said "keep looking". "They" wandered through the tables in the food court until "they" eventually spotted the sign. When Bob said to Sheri "it is over there" and pointed with his cane up in the air to restroom sign Sheri thought to herself "well it took a while but I think we are good now". They approached the restroom and both the men's and the women's sign's were clearly marked with arrows. "Al" however walked by both and proceeded to go through the doors with the bars that lead into the forbidden hallways behind the stores. Eek. Even though sometimes Sheri would rather believe that "Al" doesn't exist she knows in her heart that Bob needs her...whether she likes it or not.
