This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Livng with Bob and "Al"

Sheri is realizing that Bob is struggling more and more with the concept of time. When getting ready for "work" (code for Adult Day Center) in the morning, "Al" will put his coat and gloves on and stand at the door 45 minutes or so before it is time to go. Sometimes the changes with this disease are so subtle you hardly even notice them . Darn that Alzheimer's.....

  1. So hard, Sheri. Darn it, is right. My mom is getting to the stage now where she'll start to disengage from her environment. She'll put her head down and close her eyes to block everything out because everything is just confusion to her. SO hard to watch.

My dad goes to see her every day from noon till dinner. He feeds lunch to her because she's not eating well on her own anymore, she forgets what she's supposed to do with the food. Seven days a week he's there with her for about 5 hours a day. But having a loving team of people at Wealshire to take care of the really tough tasks has been so helpful for him.

You as the main caretaker, Sheri....it's gotta be so draining...

    Day at a time...

  2. Betsy,

It is so sweet that your Dad is so dedicated to your Mom like that. Unless you are living this like you and I are, there is no way to explain it. One day at a time....
