Sheri toured 3 memory care faculties yesterday with one of her dear friends from church. This process is more than just hard, the emotional toll is great, but the toll is probably greater if she doesn't do it all.
1. Place one: Pluses- Very caring marketing person, asked a lot of questions about "Al's" life what his likes and dislikes were. Room size good, community size good, no smell, no set visiting hours visitors can come and go as they please with a code. Private room. Cost - excepts Elderly Waiver the plan that Bob is on.
Minuses- Although activities were posted not much interaction between staff and residents. But in fairness the first activity had not started yet. Residents just kind of sitting around. No outside secure area. Possible challenges with language barriers between care givers and residents.
2. Place 2: Pluses- Cost - excepts Elderly Waiver, room size doable. Good resident interaction.
Minuses- Very large place. Very hospital type environment bells and beeps going off continually. ( which the lady said does continue 24/7.) Market person asked nothing about Bob or "Al". Marketing person talked extremely fast. no outside area. No set visiting hours code access. Lots of challenges with language with caregivers.
3. Place Three: Pluses- Great marketing person- very interested in Bob, lots and lots of personalized questions. Much like the first place she went. She was very happy and excited I was there, small community, room size good , clean no smell, beautiful setting, outside secured walking area. good resident interaction, no set visiting hours code access.
Minuses- although they do except the Elderly Waiver, available shared male rooms very hard to come by. Private rooms would be a charge over and above Bob's income.
Sheri feels a bit like Goldilocks and the three bears, looking for the most comfortable bed.
Except Sheri feels like she wants to throw up.

ReplyDeleteMy dad stayed at St.Mary's winsted when we could no longer meet his needs at home... the best, most caring staff I've met and a lovely outside area. It's far away from the cities (the downside) but he was even able to attend his own quarterly care meetings and they always made every effort to accommodate his every request (like a mini fridge in his room for snacks). He had a shared room for a while but was moved to a single when difficulties arose. Worth a look. Good luck, its very hard to chose. All the best.
