This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri sometimes forgets just how cognitively impaired Bob really is. Sheri was cleaning out some kitchen drawers and came across about 5 small electric cords that go to small appliances. Bob used to be very particular about cords like these, always winding them up neatly and putting a tie around them to keep the cords untangled. Bob was bored while Sheri was cleaning so she handed the cords to Bob and asked him to wind them individually and put a tie around them. Sheri was surprised that "Al" was not able to accomplish this. When he started out it appeared he could do it. That lasted a few short minutes. "Al" would pick up one, put it down pick up the same one, and so forth and so on. Then he started to try to attach random cords together to find a way to plug them into each other, then put them all in a bag and then poured them back out in his lap and started over again. Such a simple task for Bob "the build anything, fix anything hardware guy" but totally impossible for "Al".
Such a very sad disease.

  1. Today my mom asked me to show her how to zip up her zipper. Yes, it is a very sad disease indeed.
