This blog is about life with my husband who was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2008. He was 64 at the time although now, knowing more about the disease, Alzheimer's was present many, many years ago, which is why early detection is so important. As you read the blog the character "Al" that I created in 2008, represents the way that Alzheimer's is invading our daily lives.
There is an archive tab further down the page that starts from the beginning of our journey.

Living with Bob and "Al"

Sheri started her journey to look for places that she might choose for Bob and "Al", if and when the time is right. She was overwhelmed by the lack of correct information  provided to her. She did learn a couple of things that were interesting though:

1. The "Elderly Waiver" that Bob is on is not a very welcome word, there is very limited availability for this here. Basically one place told Sheri that they can't afford to take to many waivers because they need the more expensive units to pay for the cost of running the building.
2.Then she learned that some places in the book she was given that said they took Elderly Waiver, only accepted it in the Assisted Living, not in the Memory Care facility.
3. Sheri asked the difference between the Assisted Living and Memory care, because looking around the room in the Assisted Living, most if them had to have some memory issues. She learned the two things that meant they needed to be in Memory Care was one, if they are a flight risk, and two, if they have aggresive behavior.
4. She learned the trigger from going from either Assisted living or Memory Care to a nursing home is if it takes more than 1 person to get them out of bed.(Short of any other medical reasons of course)
5. Some of the places that did accept the waiver, had only female rooms and it had been that way for the last 12 years. They had not had the need for male rooms. (Sheri thought  "how odd".).
6. She learned that the reason more women are in facilities then men, are number one because women live longer, but number two because a women will keep her husband home and take care of him herself for as long as she possibly can, even quitting her job if necessary. A man however will feel as though he can not care for his wife appropriately place her way earlier than the other way around.

Well that is what she learned, what a depressing day it was, but Sheri still thought she should share what she learned.
